We've been cutting patterns and making covers for 22 years, which means we've also spent 22 years watching people buy the wrong one. It's almost never carelessness. It's that the category is deliberately hard to read: the language used to sell a genuinely made-to-measure cover and the language used to sell a badged size bracket are close to identical.
This guide is the process we'd walk you through in person. Four questions, in order, plus the specifications worth checking before you spend anything.
Question 1 — Is it actually custom?
Start here, because it determines whether the rest matters.
A great many companies sell "custom fit" covers that are nothing of the kind. The mechanism is straightforward: one pattern is cut for a vehicle class, then attributed to every model that fits roughly inside that envelope. Your car appears in the dropdown. The pattern was never cut for your car.
Three questions separate the real thing from the badged version:
- Is there a pattern for my specific year, make and model? Not a size, not a class — a pattern.
- Was that pattern taken from an actual vehicle? Genuine patterns come from physical measurement or 3D scanning of the car itself. Derived patterns come from published length, width and height, which describe the box a car fits inside and nothing about the shape within it.
- Can it be altered for modifications? This is the giveaway. If a company can cut around a body kit, a wing, a lowered stance or a blower, they hold a real per-vehicle pattern they can modify. If they can't, there was never a pattern to begin with.
Purfit's library holds over 100,000 patterns, each developed from a physical vehicle over more than two decades. The premium indoor cover is computer-cut from over 40 measurements per car. Modifications are routine work rather than a special request. There's more on how that process works, and what it's worth, in is a custom car cover worth the money.
Question 2 — Where does the car sleep?
This decides the category, and it's the question people most often answer too quickly.
Indoors — garage, storage unit, showroom. You're protecting against dust, not weather, so waterproofing is irrelevant and softness is everything.
- Show car, classic, weekend car, or anything paint-sensitive: the Purfit indoor cover. 240gsm cotton fleece with four-way stretch and 10% spandex, so it sits down onto the body rather than draping over it. Super-soft cotton inner that breathes exceptionally well. Computer-cut from 40+ measurements. Black, red, dark green or dark blue.
- Daily driver that needs dust protection: Custom360. 220gsm velvet stretch fleece, mirror pockets, and 15 colours — genuinely useful if you want to match a build. Free logo, storage bag and worldwide delivery included.
Outdoors — driveway, carport, street. Now the question is how harsh the position is, and be honest about it.
- Harsh — full sun, heavy rain, coastal salt air, parked under trees, out there every day: Flexguard. The only Purfit car cover we call 100% waterproof, with taped seams that seal the stitch line itself. Stretchable polyurethane shell that holds position in wind, soft inner knit liner. Silver or black.
- Moderate — carport, mostly sheltered driveway: OutdoorXv3. 600D marine-grade solution-dyed polyester, waterproofed and breathable, soft polycotton fleece lining, A&E Sunstop UV-stable thread, 6-way buckle system with elastic cord front and rear, five-year warranty.
- Mild or occasional, and you want it light and quick on and off: EazyShield. 150D marine-grade solution-dyed polyester, waterproofed and breathable, 6-way buckle system, four-year warranty.
Motorcycle — the Motorcycle Indoor Custom Cover for garaged bikes, in 15 colours with free double logos. The Motorcycle Outdoor Custom Cover for bikes parked outside — 100% waterproof, silver or black, free logo.
Question 3 — What's the contact layer?
This is the specification most buyers never think to ask about, and it's the one that decides whether a cover is safe on paint you care about.
Something is going to be touching your clearcoat, continuously, for years. It should be chosen deliberately.
Our covers are specified individually for this. Flexguard has a soft inner knit liner. OutdoorXv3 is lined with soft polycotton fleece. The Purfit indoor cover has a super-soft cotton inner; Custom360 is velvet stretch fleece throughout.
EazyShield is the deliberate exception — it's unlined, so the fabric slides smoothly along paintwork rather than gripping it. That's the correct design for a lightweight cover that goes on and off frequently, where the priority is easy handling. It's worth knowing which principle a cover is built on, rather than assuming lined always means better.
What you should not accept is heavyweight outdoor shell fabric sitting directly against clearcoat on a cover meant to stay on for weeks. That's an unlined cover pretending the question doesn't exist.
Question 4 — Will it stay put?
A cover that moves is a cover abrading your paint. Fit does most of the work here — a pattern cut to your car has no slack for wind to get under — but the anchoring system finishes the job.
Look for multiple tensioned anchor points rather than a single grommet at each end with a cord underneath. Two points let a cover pivot and balloon; our outdoor covers use a 6-way buckle system, with strong elastic cord front and rear on OutdoorXv3 to hold the hem beneath the bumpers.
The specifications worth checking on any cover
Whoever you buy from, these four separate a cover that lasts from one that doesn't. We've gone into the detail in how long custom car covers last outdoors.
- Is the thread UV-stable? Seams usually fail before fabric. Ours is A&E Sunstop throughout.
- Is the fabric solution-dyed? Colour in the fibre resists UV; colour on the surface gets stripped.
- Is it breathable? Non-breathable covers trap condensation against paint. Ours are built to vent — there's more on that in our guide to breathability versus waterproofing.
- What's the warranty? Five years on OutdoorXv3, four on EazyShield.
Ordering — genuinely a few minutes
Go to purfitcovers.com and use the vehicle selector on the home page: year, make, model. That's the measuring done — the pattern is already cut, so you don't need a tape measure or a diagram.
Choose your cover from the options that fit your vehicle. Add a logo if you'd like one — free on Custom360, the motorcycle covers and Flexguard, a small fee on the Purfit indoor cover. Pick a colour where the product offers one. Enter your details and you're finished.
Free worldwide delivery is standard, not a spend threshold. Covers are cut after you order, so allow 3 weeks, and you'll get tracking the moment yours ships. Covering more than one vehicle? Bundling two, three or four covers costs less per cover than ordering separately.
Two caveats we'd rather give you up front. If your car is a 2023–2026 model, the premium pattern may not be cut yet — in that case we'll point you to Custom360 for indoor or Flexguard for outdoor, both of which cover the full range. And if the car is modified, tell us at the order stage with measurements and photographs so the pattern is cut around it.

FAQ
How do I choose the right car cover for my vehicle?
Work through four questions in order. Is it genuinely custom — is there a pattern for your specific year, make and model, taken from an actual vehicle? Where does the car sleep — indoors means dust protection and softness, outdoors means matching the cover to how harsh the position is? What's the contact layer touching your paint? And will it stay put, meaning a fitted pattern plus multiple tensioned anchor points?
How can I tell if a car cover is genuinely custom-fit?
Ask whether a pattern exists for your specific year, make and model rather than a size or vehicle class; whether that pattern was taken from a physical vehicle by measurement or 3D scanning rather than derived from published dimensions; and whether it can be altered for modifications. The last one is the clearest test — a company that can cut around a body kit or a wing holds a real per-vehicle pattern.
What should I look for when buying a car cover?
UV-stable thread, because seams usually fail before fabric. Solution-dyed fabric, because colour in the fibre resists UV where surface colour gets stripped. Breathability, because non-breathable covers trap condensation against paint. A soft, deliberately specified contact layer. Multiple tensioned anchor points rather than a single grommet at each end. And a meaningful warranty.
What's the difference between indoor and outdoor car covers?
Indoor covers protect against dust and are built around softness and breathability — the Purfit indoor cover in 240gsm cotton fleece for show cars and classics, or Custom360 in 220gsm velvet stretch fleece for daily drivers. Outdoor covers are built for weather: Flexguard is 100% waterproof with taped seams for harsh exposure, OutdoorXv3 is waterproofed and breathable in 600D for moderate conditions, and EazyShield is a lightweight 150D option for occasional use.
Do all Purfit car covers have a soft inner lining?
The contact layer is specified per product. Flexguard has a soft inner knit liner, OutdoorXv3 a soft polycotton fleece lining, the Purfit indoor cover a super-soft cotton inner, and Custom360 is velvet stretch fleece throughout. EazyShield is deliberately unlined so the fabric slides smoothly along paintwork — the right design for a lightweight cover that goes on and off frequently.
How do I order a custom car cover from Purfit?
Use the vehicle selector on the purfitcovers.com home page — enter year, make and model. The pattern is already cut, so no measuring is needed for a standard vehicle. Choose your cover, add a logo and colour if the product offers them, and enter your details. Free worldwide delivery is included and covers typically arrive in 3 weeks, since each one is cut after you order.
Do I need to measure my car?
Not for a standard vehicle — Purfit holds over 100,000 patterns and selects yours by year, make and model. Measurements and photographs are only needed if the car is modified, so the pattern can be cut around body kits, wings, a lowered stance or bonnet modifications.
What if my car is a brand-new model?
Usually it's covered. For 2023–2026 models the premium pattern may not be cut yet, in which case we recommend Custom360 for indoor use or Flexguard for outdoor — both cover the full range, and the cover is still cut to your vehicle.
Does Purfit ship worldwide?
Yes, free worldwide delivery is included on every cover as standard, with no minimum spend. Tracking is sent when the cover ships.
